Message from the Chairman
For decades America’s Credit Union (ACU) has made it a priority to support our members and their communities. ACU’s CEO, Kenneth Leonard, has been raising funds through an annual charity golf tournament, Turkey Shoot, since 2000. The raised funds have gone to the support all of our great military members working on Joint Base Lewis-McChord through organizations such as Santa’s Castle, the Food Basket Program, and the Madigan Foundation.
In 2019, the ACU Foundation was formed to accommodate the needs of our service-members and expand our community reach and impact. This has been accomplished by providing educational, military and community support services and activities related to improving the lives ACU members and those who live and work in the South Sound.
The ACU Foundation seeks to aid where we can have the greatest impact to those we serve, which means most of our giving is directed toward organizations that are able to meet the educational, military, and support service needs of our communities.
In 2020, the Foundation received over $85,000 in contributions from local businesses and community members, helping 150 families pay household bills and buy groceries. We also sponsored hams for over 1,300 service members and their families for Christmas dinner. The foundation supports Santa’s Castle and The Madigan Foundation through an annual Golf Tournament, the Turkey Shoot, held on the first Friday in November of every year. Why play golf in November? The simple answer is that’s when ACU President, Ken Leonard and his friend Tommy Carson got the idea. They were responding to the challenges that soldiers and their families were facing with the holidays coming up. But also, it was to place a little hardship on golfers so they could understand that even when things get rough, it’s not the time to give up, keep playing, keep trying – just like our troops.
The ACU Foundation Board of Directors is made up of local leaders with a passion for our military and neighborhoods.
